Extremely RARE Beer Stein w/Sterling Silver Top

This is one of the rarest shapes in American Brilliant cut glass -- a beer stein with American cut glass and a hinged sterling silver lid. The sterling is marked with a 'cross' followed by 'sterling 925/1000 fine 1533.' This was a presentation piece and is monogrammed "Manhasset Bay Yacht Club -- June 10, 1914 -- Won by Sentana." The glass fluoresces an apple green indicating that it is American Brilliant cut glass. The cutting is very well-done on a fine, clear, water-white blank. The design is remarkably close to the "Hindoo" and "Plume" designs of J. Hoare & Co. We suspect that both the sterling and glass were special-order items.
The stein stands 6 1/4-inches tall at the rim and has a maximum diameter of 4 1/4-inches. It holds 24-oz. to the inside bottom of the rim and was probably a one-pint (16-oz.) mug with room for a 'head.' There is no internal residue or cloudiness and the sterling has been professionally polished.
American Brilliant cut glass steins without sterling are very rare; mugs with a hinged, sterlilng top are even more rare. Enjoy!
