Description:

We had always been told that the "Aberdeen" design by Jewel was exceptionally rare and was cut on stunningly beautiful blanks.  Pearson rated the design 2 for rarity (very rare) and 2 for quality/price range (one of the most desirable); page 106 of Pearson's American Cut Glass for the Discriminating Collector" says it all:  sic. "This design by Henry R. Luckok and Charles H. Taylor was patented March 19, 1912, and assigned to the Jewel Cut Glass Co. of Newark, NJ.  This company's name does not loom prominently among the cut glass houses of the Brilliant Period but this pattern belies any lack of stature as to the excellence of their product.  It is very much to their credit that this pattern which must have been very expensive to produce, should be attempted at a time when the cheaper pressed cuts were being made in competition.  The glass is of the best Steuben crystal clear quality and the deep close cutting a lapidary's delight.  Anything in this pattern belongs in the category--best of cut glass."

This vase, which is heavy for its size, stands 9 3/4-inches tall and has a 4 1/2-inch diameter base with a 20-point hobstar.  The piece is in better than extremely fine condition excepting minor horizontal scratches parallel to and close to the inside bottom of the vase.  Under normal display conditions, they do not detract from the beauty of the piece.

The "Aberdeen" design does not appear in the only known Jewel Cut Glass Co. catalog.  A copy of the catalog, which is also available on our website, will be sent with this vase.
