If you have seen our collection or followed our website, you may remember our fondness for what we call 'old glass.' It is American Brilliant cut glass that was most likely produced from the 1880s up to about 1900. 'Old glass' is deeply and precisely-cut and completely wheel-polished to a mirror-like perfection; it is always cut on heavy, clear, colorless blanks of the finest quality. Many of the pieces were early products of our best cutting houses -- T.G. Hawkes, J. Hoare & Co., Dorflinger & Sons, L. Straus & Sons and Mt. Washington.
This 6 1/2-inch round, 5 3/4-inch tall rose bowl is 'old glass' at its very best. We attribute its origin to J. Hoare & Co. because of its similarity to J. Hoare's catalogued "Elfin" design and the use of the triple-miter, 8-point 'fanned hobstar' on its bottom. Regardless, this is a great piece of early American Brilliant Period work. It is in extremely fine condition and has no internal residue or cloudiness.
An interesting feature of the rose bowl can be seen in the seven hobstars around the major diameter of the rose bowl -- six have 16-point, clear-button hobstars; the seventh hobstar has shorter points and a 3/4-inch round, clear center! We do not know why but feel that this was done 'on purpose' and was intended to be used for a monogram.
