This cordial decanter--sometimes called a chain decanter--stands 9 1/2-inches tall and has a maximum diameter of 5 1/4-inches. We feel, but cannot document it, that this decanter is a product of J. Hoare & Co. Page 26 of Spillman's 'T.G. Hawkes & His Competitors,' shows a chain decanter almost identical in shape with a sterling flip-top lid that is virtually identical to the one on this decanter. If you compare the photos of the tops, you will see that they are identical except the raised in-fill of the circular areas below the hinges are upside down. The silver maker's mark is not distinct on either piece but they seem to be the same; the numbers that follow 'sterling' also are virtually identical.
The design on this decanter--a chain of "Russian" with 8-point clear-button hobstars above swirled miter cuts and flat panels--is easily attributed to J. Hoare & Co. The sterling has been professionally polished and there is no internal cloudiness or residue.
A fine piece of American Brilliant cut glass in an unusual shape that displays very well.
