The "Toledo" design is one of Libbey's rarest designs; it is a ca. 1898 design that is shown on page 36 of the Libbey Composite catalog (an ACGA reprint). A 12-inch plate is also shown on page 239 of Rarities In American Cut Glass. This is only the second piece of "Toledo" we have been able to acquire in the last twelve years.
"Toledo" is a complex, seven-motif, cut-all-over design that was designed by Wm. Marrett and patented on May 25, 1897 for Libbey Glass Co. of Toledo, OH. This bowl was cut on Libbey's 'No.170' blank as shown in the 1896 Libbey catalog. It has an 8-inch diameter, stands 3-inches tall and is heavy to the hand at 4.75-lbs. The blank is clear and water-white; the cutting is deep and polished to a mirror-like brilliance. A Libbey-with-a-sabre signature was found on the inside of the bowl just below the rim.
