Description:

It is small, but it is great!   Cut by Tuthill on an exceptionally fine, clear, colorless blank, the basket measures only 6 1/2-inches long, 4-inches wide and 4 1/2-inches tall.  The piece is shown on page 13 of Rarities.  The design has come to be known as Tuthill's "Thousand Eyes."  The cutting is precise and beautifully polished.  Tuthill's use of crosshatching (a.k.a. fine diamond) to accentuate the rim and the 12-point hobstars is a tribute to his legendary design ability.

The basket's folded-in shape, size, the outstanding blank, the fine design and its rarity make this one of the great American Brilliant cut glass 'smalls' and it can be proudly displayed in any fine collection.  The rope handle is perfectly attached.
