RARE Mt. Washington/Pairpoint "Sultana" Decanter
FSG2350
Condition: BTEF
Price: $695.00
This fine, very old decanter was cut by Mt. Washington Glass Co. in their "Sultana" design. The design is shown in a November 1890 trade ad on page MOU3 of LABAC's Cut Glass Advertisements Book #3. Pairpoint Mfg. Co., the successor to Mt. Washington, also cut the design. Very little catalog information is available and we have found only two photos of actual pieces cut in the design in all of the many books and catalogs in our extensive reference library. Pearson rated "Sultana" 1 for rarity (rarest/highest category) and 4 for quality/price range (high priced).
Ths decanter stands 12-inches tall with the stopper and has a maximum diameter of 5-inches. The pattern-matched stopper has a large teardrop and fits perfectly. The piece is heavy for its size -- it weighs 3.3-lbs. -- and is very well-cut on a clear, white blank; it has the soft, silky feel of a completely wheel-polished piece. The base has a 48-point radiant star with varied-length rays. There is no internal cloudiness or residue.
This is a fine piece of 'old' glass from one of the very best early American Brilliant Period cutting houses in a three-motif -- fan, star and strawberry diamond -- design that is typical of the early designers.
