Rare American Brilliant Mug With Sterling Rim
FSG2932
Condition: BTEF
Price: $975.00
This mug is one of the rarest shapes in American Brilliant cut glass and the only one we have viewed with a sterling silver rim. It stands 4 3/4-inches tall and has a base diameter of 3 1/2-inches. It is deeply cut and very well-polished on a clear, water-white blank.
The rim is touchmarked with an 'R' in a shield between two other marks that are not distinguishable; 'sterling 30' follows. The mug its a presentation piece with an inscription reading "HT & GC 1904 Championship Runner-Up Leighton Calkins."
When filled to the bottom of the rim, the mug holds 14-oz. We have in our collection a Dorflinger "Sultana" mug that holds 20-oz. The small size of this mug suggests that its intended use was for ale or stout which are usually poured in lesser quantity. Or perhaps Leighton, as a runner-up, was not deserving of a full-sized mug. Your opinion is appreciated. Regardless, this is a rare and desirable item that displays very well.
