Description:

There is a lot that is known regarding this vase:

It is 15 1/4-inches tall, has a top diameter of 7-inches, weighs 6 1/2-lbs. and has a 24-point radiant star on the base.  We know that page DRE-70 of LABAC's Cut Glass Advertisements Book 1 shows a Dorflinger 1896 trade ad with a large vase of this same shape.  We know that Dorflinger sold the blanks to other cutting houses -- and we know that the design cut on this vase is not shown in any known Dorflinger book or catalog.

We do know that the design is shown on page 115 (fig.108) of Mrs. Swan's first Book, American Cut & Engraved Glass (http://brilliantglass.com/products/LS102).  The cutting house responsible for Mrs. Swan's silver-rimmed fruit bowl -- which has this same design -- has not been discovered.  Mrs. Swan assigned the name "Tiffany" to the design and this vase was cut in the "Tiffany" design (see the last photo).

The most prominent and unique motif in the "Tiffany" design is the center of the large hobstars -- which are 'a center consisting of an eight-point star with a sharp jewel containing eight facets.'  We know of no other design that uses this motif.  We would like to know if it was cut by Dorflinger or another cutting house.  Your opinion is valued -- please let us know if you can solve the 'cutting house mystery.'

None of these ramblings can detract from the uniqueness and beauty of the vase itself.  Excepting minor light scratches in the lower 1 1/2-inches of the vase, it is in our better than extremely fine condition.
