Description:

This rare and desirable Meriden salad bowl is an amazing piece of American Brilliant cut glass.  It is very deeply cut on a 10-inch by 4 1/4-inch best-metal blank that still weighs 8 3/4-lbs.  It is a handfull!  The 5/8-inch thick blank is of the same clear, colorless metal that Meriden used for their other rare designs such as "Alhambra," "Byzantine," "Cetus," "Star" and "Theodora."

In the early 1900s, the Meriden Cut Glass Co. of Meriden, CT produced some of the finest cut glass of the Brilliant Period including their "Star" design which features six, 32-point suspended hobstars round the circumference of the bowl.  The hobstars are so deeply cut their hobs extend at least 3/8 of an inch.  The flat base features its namesake 6-point star that is formed by two overlapping, equilaterial triangles whose sides are 5/8-inch wide bands filled with alternating areas filled with cane and crosshatching.  The cutting is polished to a mirror-like brilliance and the fiery appearance that is created is a pleasure to behold.  This is a rare and desirable design that is very well-crafted and suitable for predominant display in any advanced collection.
