"Wedgemere" -- a W.C. Anderson design for Libbey. Page 58 of American Cut Glass for the Discriminating Collector by J. Michael and Dorothy Pearson had these and other words for the "Wedgemere" design. "Wedgemere was patented July 7, 1891 patent #20291 by William C. Anderson for the Libbey Glass Co. At first glance it appears complicated by too many motifs. The exquisite quality of the glass and close, precise cutting make it one of the most brilliant patterns ever made. The basic innovation is the use of large ovals that intersect and overlap each other. The magnificent glass and skillful execution of the design make this pattern one of the very best ever cut. It is expensive and rare but worthy of a collector's diligent search."
Pearson rated "Wedgemere" 1 for rarity (rarest/highest category) and 1 for quality/price range (highest category).
Page 16 of the Libbey Composite catalog (an ACGA reprint) shows the exact piece; it is labeled No.222 dish Wedgemere. It measures 11 3/8-inches long, 6 3/4-inches wide and 3 3/8-inches tall at each end; it weighs 4 1/4-lbs. The cutting is exceptional in its precision and its extreme depth. The wood-wheel polish created a fiery, mirror-like appearance that emphasizes the quality of the blank -- definitely Libbey's best metal. A beautiful piece of American Brilliant cut glass that is very difficult to acquire and displays to advantage Enjoy!
