Description:

T.G. Hawkes & Co. of Corning, NY produced this large, very well-crafted, 16-oz. cologne.  It stands 7 1/4-inches tall, has a 4 3/4-inch maximum diameter and weighs a heavy-to-the-hand 2-lbs. 13-oz.  It is cut in Hawkes "Phoenix" design.  A bowl in the "Phoenix" design is shown on page 208 of Jane Spillman's book, The American Cut Glass Industry -- T.G. Hawkes & His Competitors

The design is very deeply cut and completely wheel-polished to a mirror-like brilliance.  It consists of four large, 8-point hobstars with four Brunswick stars (flat hobstars) between the points; the four large hobstars are separated by four sets of opposing fans.  The base has a 16-point radiant star.  The perfectly-fit stopper has a teardrop-shaped air bubble with the Hawkes shamrock trademark on the end of the peg; the blank is very clear and water-white.  All in all, an imposing piece that displays to advantage.

Another carefully selected piece of American Brilliant cut glass.
